SEO for Non-profits and Social Enterprises
I’ve been doing SEO for a long time and one thing I noticed about SEO is that keeping it simple is the best approach. As Google’s complex algorithm gets even more complex the simplistic approach makes more and more sense.
Since before SEO was such a big thing I’ve stuck to these few things when developing a website so that the SEO will slowly help the new website get ranking. And these techniques still seem to work today regardless of what those SEO nerds like to say.
- Get a blog on your website
- When posting on your blog, make sure the title matches what a user would search for. (ex. How to make an Apple Pie in the microwave)
- Add those little Alt Tags on your images
- Stick with good content and relevant content
- Contact other bloggers with related content and get into forums to share your stuff
- Create your YouTube account and start posting awesome videos with great content and make sure your videos link to your website
- Make sure your site is mobile-friendly
- Optimize large images so they will load faster
- Make sure your website is awesome looking and uses modern technology
- Be patient and monitor your traffic carefully
- Continue to meet new people, give them value, and have them share your content on their website
That’s it! Some nerds will tell you that some of these don’t matter anymore and it’s all about back links etc etc, and that may be true, but this is a good place to start when you don’t know where to start. I’ve built a Mexican food website that came from page 20 and moved all the way to page one, which in turn boosted their catering business like crazy just by using this list on their website.
And here’s the thing about SEO’s. It’s not really about getting you on page one, because any SEO can do that if they used clever techniques. Trust me, I met plenty and their clients were really upset before they came to me. What it’s really about is driving the right people to your website so you get a good return on your investment. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like calling myself a SEO specialist these days because of all the corruption that has come about.
Anyway, stick with these steps in mind and start getting your message out!
